THE STORY OF JANE HAMILTON (From June Hutchinson's Book)

Helen Woodliffe recorded these notes after a talk with Florence about 1991.
"Jane Hamilton, ( daughter of George Hamilton) who married Nicholas Lewarne in (Cobourg was a twin. She may have been born on board the ship bringing her parents from Scotland for her son George, in response to the census taker in 1891, said that his mother was born "on board the boat".

It is said that her twin and her mother were washed overboard during a storm. Her mother had been very ill and the captain invited her to come up on deck. A huge wave washed her and one of the babies into the ocean where they were taken by a shark. The captain was later court-martialed for failing to aid her.
Later, George Hamilton married the lady who helped him with the other baby (Jane) on board the ship.

We had hoped to find more of the story from newspaper accounts in the "Cobourg Star" but there are no records of these papers earlier than about 1831. Piecing together various facts, we can estimate that the boat trip was in 1828, which assumes that Jane was born at sea. The year 1828 is calculated as her birth year from her age given at the time of her death.

Children of NICHOLAS LEWARNE and JANE HAMILTON are:
i. AGNES[7] LEWARNE, b. 1853; d. 1877, Iowa;
m. REV. HENRY TRURO BRAY, 1875, Coburg Ontario Canada.

THE STORY OF AGNES LEWARNE, HENRY BRAY, AND SON, HENRY
(From June Hutchinson's Book)

Some of this story comes from the family bible, some from the 1861 census, some from Florence Lewarne's recollections recorded by Helen Woodliffe after a 1991 discussion with her, and some from items in the Cobourg Sentinel of 1877.

Agnes and her twin brother John "were born on the 4th day of May in the year of our Lord 1853, at the hour of half past 8 in the evening" to their mother Jane Hamilton and father Nicholas Lewarne.

The Lewarne home was described in the 1861 census as" a frame house, 1 story, on 4 acres of land. Their livestock were 1 Horse, 1 Cow, 2 Pigs, all valued at $150. It was noted that they owned a carriage valued at $100".

And the bible notes "Aggie, daughter of the above (Nicholas and Jane Lewarne), was married at the above mentioned residence (that of her grandparents, George and Agnes Hamilton) on Wednesday, 26th of May, 1875 to the Rev. Henry Truro Bray of Marquette, Mich., US. The Rev. Wm. Joliffe of the B. C. (Bible Christian) Church was the officiating minister. (The Bible Christian church was still to built). The bible failed to record it, but baby Henry Truro, was born 24 May, 1877 in far off Iowa.

Then tragedy, just two years later, seen first on June 23, 1877 in The Cobourg Sentinel, five days after the event. Recorded in their death notices "In Marvelly, Iowa on Monday 18th inst., Mrs. Aggie Bray daughter of Mr. Nicholas Lewarne of this town, aged 24".

The family bible noted "Aggie Bray, wife of the Rev. Henry Truro Bray died at Mooreville, Tama County, Iowa, US. of heart disease at 12.15 p.m. on Monday, 18th of June, 1877. She was a beloved and affectionate wife for 2 years and 23 days and a fond mother for 25 days, 3 hours and 35 minutes. A devoted Christian consecrated in late and glorified in death ".

The Cobourg Sentinel had more facts from family friends on June 30 and ran the following story. "Died at Mooreville, Iowa, June 18 of asphyxia after a brief illness, Mrs. .Aggie, wife of the Rev. T H Bray, B.D. The deceased was born at Cobourg May 4, 1853, married May 26, 1875 was a devoted wife, a kind and sympathizing friend and a genuine Christian lady, showing to all in her daily life that her heart was pure and good.

The family of the deceased has the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community, and we share with them the hope of a reunion in that better land where there are no partings, and where bliss ineffable forbids a tear. (The) Grief stricken husband is now about to set out (from Iowa) for Cobourg having the care of an infant 3 weeks old, that he may lay his loved one to rest in the family sepulchral ground. We accompany him with our prayers and pray that he may be comforted while alone with his dead."

The story seems to have been submitted to the paper and signed by four individual friends of the family. They were C. A. Williams, George Treanor, Wm. Gibson, and I. Campbell.

The body of Agnes was returned to Cobourg as related here to Helen Woodliffe by Florence Lewarne.

"Agnes had beautiful long red hair and she was frail. She married H.T. Bray who was a missionary. He belonged to a group who were moon worshipers. He took Agnes to the mission field where conditions were too harsh for her. With the birth of her baby, she was sent home but died en route. She was carried in the caboose of the train. The baby was left unattended and cried. The train passengers looked after him. He was kept in the baggage car. One passenger wrote a song about the baby whose mother was in the caboose while he was in the baggage car. The song became popular. The baby died."

Florence gives reference to a friend working at the archives of the Anglican church for possible verification of the story .If Henry Bray was with the Anglican church then we doubt he could be described as a "moon worshiper". We believe he was a missionary to the Indians in part of lowa. Could the Indians have been the "moon worshipers" and the story gotten twisted after 114 years?

It did get a bit warped. Agnes did not die on the train but rather, while still in Iowa. The story sounds like the baby died on the train too, but that was not the case, as this sad story continues.

Cobourg Sentinel- Sat. Aug. 18, 1877 "On Thursday (Aug 16) Henry Truro infant son of Rev. H.T. Bray, age 2 months and 23 days." And from the family bible, "Henry Truro, son of Henry Truro and Aggie Bray, born May 24th, 1877 and died Cobourg 20th August, 1877".

Finally in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery, Cobourg, Ontario, inscribed on the stone erected by Janet Lewarne Byrne, "Agnes, wife of Rev. Henry Bray, daughter of Nicholas and Jane Lewarne, died June 18, 1877, aged 24. Her infant Henry Truro Bray died Cobourg, Aug. 20, 1877, age 3 months". The inscription and family bible are both wrong as Henry died Aug. 16.

FRANCIS LEWARNE:
The Sad Story of Frank (Francis) Lewarne

(From June Hutchinson's Book)

"Francis... called Frank by his family was a Teamster/truck driver for the Canadian Post Office. On Sunday evening January 21, 1917, he had gone to see his son Edwin off to war.

Leaving the train with others who had visited on the train, he followed Colonel Macdonald across the tracks to the station and was hit by an engine that was obscured by a cloud of steam and swirling snow. Colonel Macdonald and Frank were struck and pinned under the engine. Colonel Macdonald was killed instantly. Frank was in terrible pain as the men worked to lift the engine off his body. He was taken to Western Hospital. He wasn't expected to live and died at the General Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 25, 1917.

The engineer, fireman and signal operator were arrested and faced trial. The verdict has not been found. Son Edwin was a private in the Division Cyclists' Corps. Another son, Private Albert Lewarne was overseas.
