Descendants of Richard Lewarne circa 1735

The First Generation (traceable)

1.

RICHARD[1] LEWARNE. He married MARY STEPHENS 1759 in Falmouth

RICHARD LEWARNE:
Richard, a mariner, and Mary have been established as the probable heads of the family tree due to a fairly robust tie up of dates based on their son, Richard (2), who resided in Gerrans. A marriage record for the son, Richard (2), to Jenefer has never been found but there are two age milestones that are explained in his notes that suggest that he was born circa 1761, the year a baptism was recorded for a Richard (2) born to Richard (1) & Mary in Falmouth. A marriage record for Richard (2) and Jenefer may help to substantiate the link if it indicates the names of parents.

For further details about Richard (2) the son, see his notes.

Children of RICHARD LEWARNE and MARY STEPHENS are:

2. i. RICHARD[2] LEWARNE, b. Circa 1761, Falmouth; d. 1850, Truro.
ii. ELIZABETH LEWARNE, b. Circa 1766, Philleigh.
iii. JOHN LEWARNE, b. Circa 1768, Philleigh.
3. iv. WILLIAM LEWARNE, b. Circa 1770, Philleigh.

The Second Generation

2.

RICHARD[2] LEWARNE (RICHARD[1]) was born Circa 1761 in Falmouth, and died 1850 in Truro. He married JENEFER.

RICHARD LEWARNE:
The record of Richards's marriage to Jenefer has not been found. However, the records show they had three children all born in Gerrans, the first in 1796 (baptised). A complication is that there was a marriage between a Richard Lewarne and Jane Sawle in 1792 in Gerrans. There is no confusion that the two Richard's may have been one as Richard and Jane clearly had their own children. The witness at their marriage was 'Richard' and it is assumed this was the Richard who married Jenefer.

The 1841 census records that Richard, a Blacksmith, was living with Mary Martin, aged 35, in Church Town, Gerrans. He was aged 80 then. Jenefer, his wife, had died in 1838. Mary was possibly his daughter who had a baptism date of 1799. Assuming the baptism was close to her birth date this would have made Mary aged 42 so the assumption may be incorrect. In the same house at the time of the census was Benjamin Martin, aged 20 and Emma Martin aged 1. The relationship between Benjamin and Mary is not known and there is not a Martin/Lewarne marriage in Cornwall parish records.

A family history record has also been found that indicates Richard lived at Rosteague Farm in the Gerrans/Portscatho area. The source of this record is not known.

The parish records show that Richard died in August 1850 at Union House, Truro, aged 90. It is this and the 1841 census information that leads to the conclusion that he was probably born to Richard & Mary in Falmouth in November 1761. This is a baptism date but there is a more or less exact tie up with his age at the time of the 1841 census although there is a discrepancy in his age, given as 90 in 1850, of about a year. There could be several explanations for this given the lack of accurate records in those days and the fact that his actual birth date is not known.

JENEFER:
The marriage record for Richard and Jenefer has never been found. Details have been taken from their children’s records. Her burial date is recorded as 13 February 1838, aged 81.

Children of RICHARD LEWARNE and JENEFER are:

4. i. RICHARD[3] LEWARNE, b. Circa 1796, Gerrans; d. 1838, Gerrans.
ii. MARY LEWARNE, b. Circa 1799, Gerrans.
5. iii. JOHN LEWARNE, b. Circa 1801, Gerrans; d. 1829, Gerrans.

3.

WILLIAM[2] LEWARNE (RICHARD[1]) was born Circa 1770 in Philleigh. He married ANN GUY 1796 in Falmouth.

RICHARD[3] LEWARNE (RICHARD[2], RICHARD[1]) was born Circa 1796 in Gerrans, and died 1838 in Gerrans. He married BETSEY GREEN 1818 in St Just in Roseland.

RICHARD LEWARNE:
Richard married Betsey (Elizabeth) Green in the beautiful church at the side of the river Fal at St Just in Roseland on the Roseland peninsular in 1818. Inspection of the graveyard at the church reveals that Green was a well-known name in the area at that time and this marriage started the trend of Green becoming the second christian name in the Lewarne family. There were three Richard Greens and one John Green.

Their first child 'Mary' was probably born 'Mary Peters'. The Cornwall Quarter Sessions record of 20/4/1819 shows a reference to a child named Mary born to Mary Peters . The father is cited as Richard Lewarn of Gerrans. The Gerrans Parish records shows a batism of a child 'Mary' born to Richard and Elizabeth dated 26/2/1819 and there is also a baptism record for 'Mary' born to Mary Peters on the same date. Mary Peters (the mother) is described as a pauper living in the Poorhouse. It is therefore probable that Richard was the father and that Mary was adopted into the Lewarn family just after they married. In those days the father of an illigitimate child could be imprisoned if he didn't contribute to the upkeep of the child.

Richard died in 1838 aged 42. This was the birth year of his tenth child.

BETSEY (Elizabeth) GREEN

In the 1841 census Betsey is listed as Elizabeth living in Churchtown, Gerrans. The census notes that she carries on the business of Blacksmith (following the death of Richard in 1838). She was aged 40 in 1841 according to the census. Her children are listed as Mary (20), William (15), Jane (15), Charlot (14), Thirza (10), and Catharin (3). William was an Apprentice Blacksmith.

In the 1851 census Betsey is still living in Churchtown and is listed as 'Blacksmith's Widow'. Living with her are William (26), Richard (21), both Journeymen Blacksmith's. Jane (25),Thirza (19) were Dressmakers. Catherine (12) was a Scholar.
